The American rock group Eagles was formed in 1971 and consisted of Glenn Frey and Bernie Leadon on guitar, Randy Meisner on bass and Don Henley playing the drums, yet the band was to have differing lineups during its existence. The Eagles’ founding members actually met as they were all performing in Linda Ronstadt’s backing band, but soon the decision was made to start their own project. The Los Angeles-based group ranks among the most successful artists of the 1970s, with two of their albums listed in the top 10 of best-selling albums of all time in the U.S. Moreover, they would produce five number one singles and win six Grammy Awards.

Country rock

In 1971, the Eagles signed with Asylum Records and released their self-titled debut album a year later. The album would spawn two top ten hits, including “Take It Easy.” The overall style and chords the Eagles perform in this song exemplify the country-oriented sound employed by the group in their early years. Their second album, Desperado, was issued in 1973. Although it was never released as a single, its title track would become one of their most popular songs.

International fame

Going forward, the Eagles’ style would evolve into a more rock-oriented sound, gaining a wider audience in the process. Also, a fifth member, guitarist Don Felder, was added whilst recording their third album, On the Border. It would be their fourth record, One of These Nights, which became the band’s big breakthrough. Issued in 1975, the album featured three top five singles and fostered the Eagles’ international fame. Being dissatisfied by the musical direction the group was taking, Bernie Leadon left the group and was replaced by Joe Walsh. The band toured extensively, but managed to find the time to record a new album during 1976, Hotel California. Breakup and reunion

The Eagles’ lineup altered again when Randy Meisner left the band in 1977, being replaced by Timothy B. Schmit. They were to release two more albums before announcing their breakup in 1982. It would not be the end of the group though, as they officially reunited in 1994. A live album,* Hell Freezes Over*, was released in 1996 and consequently topped the charts, giving testimony to the continued popularity of the Eagles. Unfortunately, after becoming ill Glenn Frey died in 2016, aged 67. His son Deacon would take his place a year later. Also, guitarist Vince Gill joined the band, with Don Felder being expelled from the band already in 2001. The Eagles were induced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
