Since the group was formed in 1965 in London, Pink Floyd has become one of the most successful and influential bands in history. The rock band was established by students Syd Barrett (guitar, lead vocals), Nick Manson (drums), Roger Waters (bass guitar, vocals) and Richard Wright (keyboards, vocals). They were joined by guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour in 1967. One year later in 1968, Barett, who was the leader of the band, left due to mental health issues. Pink Floyd's music is often characterized by its use of unconventional chord progressions and psychedelic soundscapes. Many of their songs incorporate minor chords, creating a dark, moody atmosphere. Some of the most frequently used chord combinations in Pink Floyd's music include Em, G, D, A, C, and Bm. The band often used extended chords and unusual chord voicings, creating a distinctive sound that has influenced countless other artists.

Pioneers of progressive rock

Pink Floyd is known for its psychedelic rock chords, philosophical lyrics and elaborate live shows. They were pioneers of progressive rock and ambient music, having left their mark on these genres. In total the band, that is celebrated internationally, had managed to sell more than 250 million records by 2013; The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall were two of the best-selling albums of all time. In fact, the impact of their work was so significant, the group became part of the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as well as the British equivalent in 2005. In 1967, when the group was still led by Barrett, they released their debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and two singles that made it into the charts. However, due to Barrett’s deteriorating mental health, Waters became the thematic leader. He wrote most lyrics and crafted the concepts behind the albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973),* Wish You Were Here* (1975), The Wall (1979) and The Final Cut (1983). The third of these albums gave birth to the timeless lyrics every non-conforming student in subsequent history knows by heart: “We don’t need no education, we don’t need no thought control.” Next to their music albums that were hugely successful, Pink Floyd’s psychedelic chords can also be heard in several movies.

Pink Floyd Sound

In 1966, the band began to really take off, receiving their first paid bookings. One of their performances took place at the Marquee Club, which used to be a music venue in London, where they were discovered. At that time their repertoire was mainly made up of rhythm and blues songs. Peter Jenner, who was a lecturer at London School of Economics, was blown away by Pink Floyd’s sound and their show, which led him to become the band’s manager together with his friend Andrew King. Back then, the band used to call themselves Pink Floyd Sound. The name former band leader Barrett came up with in a spur of the moment before one of their gigs, was derived from two blues musicians he had records of: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. However, Jenner proposed they drop the “sound” part. Pink Floyd was born. With King and Jenner as their managers, the band established itself in London’s underground music scene, starting to experiment with psychedelic light shows and instrumentals. One year later, in 1967, they started to really gain momentum and were noticed by more influential people within the music industry, marking the start of what would become an international breakthrough.

After Barrett's exit Wright also left the group in 1979, followed by Waters in 1985. Their split was caused by personal tensions among members. However, the band was upheld by Gilmour and Mason who were later rejoined by Wright. The albums A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and *The Division Bell *(1994) were produced by the trio. The remaining members of Pink Floyd subsequently went on a tour before taking time off, so fans could once more listen to the familiar chords from both albums. The next time the band joined together was in 2005. All members but Barrett, who passed away in 2006, reunited for a one-time gig at Live 8, which was a series of benefit concerts. Barrett’s death was followed by Wright’s, who passed away in 2008. However, with everything they have contributed to the music industry, the band and its members really are immortal.
