The Rolling Stones

Formed in London in 1962, as a rhythm and blues band, the Stones’ career now stretches over a mind-blowing six decades. Jagger and Richards songwriting

The story goes that Mick Jagger (born July 26, 1943) and Keith Richards (born Dec. 18, 1943) became friends after they bumped into each other at a train station in Kent, England, in the fall of 1961. Together, they would write almost all of the Rolling Stones songs that we know today, becoming the driving force behind the groundbreaking bluesy rock ‘n’ roll sound that characterizes the band’s music. Drummer Charlie Watts (born June 2, 1941) has been with the band from the start. Multi-instrumentalist Ronnie Wood (born June 1, 1947) joined the Rolling Stones in 1975, replacing guitarist Mick Taylor. Only later, in 1993, after bassist Bill Wyman left the band, Wood became an official member of the Rolling Stones. Since then, Darryl Jones is the bass guitarist of the Stones but not an official member. The musical interaction of Wood and Richards has been described by the latter as a “weaving” of sounds.

Founder of the group was the multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones (Feb. 28, 1942 – July 3, 1969). He came up with the band name and, together with Richards, developed the unique sound, which is heavily influenced by his love for the blues. Under Jones’ direction, the Jagger-Richards writing team grew stronger and the musical direction of the band changed. But Jones started having alcohol and drug problems, which eventually got him fired in 1969. Jones tragically died a month later in his own swimming pool at the age of 27.

(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction

The most famous Rolling Stones riff is probably that of the song “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” that marked their international breakthrough in 1965. Together with other bands from the U.K. (the Beatles, the Who, the Kinks, and many more) they “invaded” the USA with their music. This period in the ‘60s is referred to in the history books as the British Invasion. Other instantly recognizable Rolling Stones chords are those of “Wild Horses.”
