The American indie rock band Modest Mouse was formed in 1992 in Issaquah, Washington by singer/guitarist Isaac Brock, drummer Jeremiah Green and bassist Eric Judy. Being teenagers, Brock and Judy met each other in a local family video store whilst the former was working there. Shortly thereafter, the two of them ran into Green at a heavy metal show, upon which the trio decided to start a band. Using the shed where 18-year old Brock lived to rehearse, the group began to develop their sound which would see them top the charts over a decade later. Known for their lo-fi atmospheric and gritty punk-inspired music and chords, Modern Mouse would help to define indie rock during the first decades of the third millennium.

Breakthrough

Modern Mouse recorded and released their first EP, Blue Cadet-3, Do You Connect, with K Records in 1994. They also recorded an album, Sad Sappy Sucker, yet it was shelved, only to be released as part of a compilation in 2001. Issued by Up Records, their first full-length album would arrive in 1996. This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About was received well by the critics, as was its follow-up, The Lonesome Crowded West, released a year later. It also proved to be a commercial success and their ever-growing fan base sparked the attention of major label Epic Records, which signed the group and released their third album, 2000’s The Moon & Antarctica. Following a nervous breakdown, Green left the band in 2003 and was replaced by percussionist Benjamin Weikel. Also, guitarist Dann Gallucci joined the group and with its new configuration, Modest Mouse released a fourth album, Good News For People Who Love Bad News, in 2004. It became their real breakthrough album, acquiring mainstream success and generating two hit singles, “Ocean Breathes Salty” and “Float On”, the latter of which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. Modest Tempo

Drummer Jeremiah Green rejoined Modest Mouse at the end of 2004 and with Gallucci being replaced by guitarist Johnny Marr the band released its fifth album, We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, in 2007. Including the hit single “Dashboard”, the album would be their first to top the album charts. It would take a while before a new album was to be released and in the meantime, the band issued a collection of outtakes and unreleased singles named No One’s First, And You’re Next. Also, Modest Mouse toured extensively and would experience significant changes to their line-up, with Marr and co-founder Judy leaving the band and on the other hand the addition of several new members, including guitarist Jim Fairchild and multi-instrumentalist Tom Peloso. Again storming the charts, Modest Mouse released their sixth studio album in 2015, Strangers To Ourselves.
