In this article for Make Music Day 2023 you’ll find:
Origins of Make Music Day
Back in Paris, 1982, Jack Lang and the staff of France’s Ministry of Culture introduced a new type of musical holiday called Fête de la Musique, which translates to both “festival of music” and “make music!”
Unlike traditional music festivals, their vision for Make Music Day was to create a day where anyone and everyone, regardless of skill level, could join and play music or host performances. Street corners, parks, rooftops – anywhere could become a stage for musicians. The festival would take place on the summer solstice, 21st June.
The festival took place on the summer solstice, June 21st. Since then, it has evolved into an international celebration of music, with official events held in over 1000 cities across 120 countries. Musicians of all levels and styles come together, transforming their cities into creative community hubs.
The importance and benefits of playing music
Music acts as a universal gift that connects people and fosters social cohesion. It goes beyond standard human communication and stimulates the brain in unique ways, making it beneficial for individuals with disabilities or illnesses.
For example, music can trigger memories and serve as a powerful communication tool for people with dementia. Additionally, music improves mood, brings people from diverse backgrounds together, and helps develop social skills and confidence in individuals of all ages.
Engaging with music provides a unique way to interact and share experiences with others. It’s not just enjoyable; it’s good for your well-being!

Everybody’s ability to make music
The message we really want to convey is that anyone from all walks of life can create or participate in music. It’s the greatest gift music gives us.
Witness how legendary musicians like Bobby McFerrin guide stadiums full of people to create powerful, harmonious symphonies:
And explore the extraordinary talents of virtuoso musicians like Jacob Collier, who can transform an audience into a choir:
These examples prove that music knows no boundaries and that everyone has the potential to create something incredible.
