It’s the middle of the summer and we all know what that means, right? Time for a sunny summer sale! To express our love for the sun we at Chordify hung a hammock, cooled our lemonade and selected a few summer songs especially for you. We’ve highlighted seven summer favorites below to give you an impression of what jams await you.

Summertime – Ella Fitzgerald

Summertime” by jazz legend Ella is a delicious jam. It’s jazz, that’s right. But don’t be discouraged, this is one of those moments where you can learn some new variations of existing chords. Tip: the song is set in Eb, but if you place your capo on the first fret this changes to E. That makes it a lot easier to play.

In the Summertime – Mungo Jerry

Mungo Jerry’s “In the Summertime” is guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s face. It’s the musical equivalent of the feeling of freedom that creeps in when warm sun rays wake you up in the morning during your holiday. Feel free to replace “she” with “he” in the lyrics.

Sunshine Reggae – Laid Back

If there’s a genre that stands for sun and summer, it is reggae. That’s why “Sunshine Reggae” shouldn’t be left out of your summer jam. Pay close attention to your strumming hand, a reggae attack is one of the most important parts of the sound.

Soak up the Sun – Sheryl Crow

Yes, soak it up indeed! With a song like this, you can’t go wrong. “Soak up the Sun” by country diva Sheryl Crow is always a good addition to your setlist. Especially when you use it during a beach jam by a campfire. But it works just as well in your grandma’s living room.

Black Hole Sun – Soundgarden

It’s not all fun and games during these summer months, therefore an occasional serious grunge track amidst all the cheerfulness is needed for emotional balance. “Black Hole Sun” by the nineties rock band Soundgarden is an absolute must. Since the guitars of the band are tuned in Eb you can do one of three things. One: you play along with the chord progression as it is indicated. Two: you tune your guitar one semitone lower. Three: you place the capo on the first fret.

Sonne – Rammstein

And now that we’re on the subject of raw tracks, the German shock rockers of Rammstein have their own version of an ode to the sun. “Sonne” is hard, slow and very German. Raise your beer stein and jam along in your own way.

Summertime – DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince

A long, long time ago when Will Smith was as old as his son Jaden Smith is now, the artist made this summer hit. “Summertime” is the ideal ending of this list. After all, we’re back to square one. But now the only thing that’s jazzy is DJ Jazzy Jeff. Happy jamming!
