Filipino flavors from Belle Mariano and Cean Jr.

Hitting the number 1 spot with her first entry in the top 10 songs of the month is Belle Mariano, from The Philippines. The track Bugambilya is a soft ballad featuring acoustic guitars and gentle, warm melodic vocals, with soaring harmonies.

The chord progression features some interesting guitar voicings and the arrangement is quite layered. Elements are gradually added to the instrumentation, with strings and percussion building the tension before the restrained outro. This is a charming song and features some interesting chords – check out Bugambilya here

Cean Jr. is another artist from The Philippines entering the top 10 songs of the month for the first time. The track YK has already racked up 66 million streams on Spotify, and he’s generated a significant fanbase in his home country. It’s quite a different vibe from Bugambilya, with R&B and soul flavors. There’s a prominent, expressive guitar riff underlying a warm chord progression, complimented with subtle synths and a stripped back drum beat to create a relaxed groove. This is an ideal candidate for you musicians looking for some new inspiration. Listen to YK here

Alternative folk from Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners

Folk songs from the last decade don’t often appear in the top 10 songs of the month, so this is an interesting addition to the list from Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners. Their song Evergreen has garage folk vibes, with a live feel to the recording and dense instrumentation. It’s reminiscent of artists like Mumford & Sons with the vocal approach, but the guitars and arrangement have clear influences from alternative and indie rock too. It’s a brief but powerful track, and with only four chords in the progression, it’s accessible to everyone. Have a listen to Evergreen here.

Amongst the other new entries in the top 10 songs of September is the chilled, R&B vibes of Daniel Caesar with his track Best Part.

There’s also the reggaeton hit TQG by Karol G and Shakira, and making up the rest of the top 10 songs of September are tunes by perennial favorites including Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and R.E.M.
