Indonesian Celtic Punk enters the top 10

Regular readers of the top 10 know that there’s often an eclectic mix of artists, and this month is no different as we welcome Indonesian band The Cloves and the Tobacco.

They have a high-energy punk rock sound, a genre which has been popular in Indonesia and gaining traction since the 90’s. Additionally, they have a celtic influence with the instrumentation featuring violin and banjo, reminiscent of celtic punk heavyweights Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly.

Their track Biarkan Berlari is an exciting one to jam with, featuring strong vocal melodies and space for improvisation around the main chord progression.

In typical punk style, the music is quite minimal, with the song featuring only four chords. This means it’s accessible to any level of musician. The high-energy rock approach is also similar to the other Indonesian entry from MCPR. Check out the track Biarkan Berlari here.

Zach Bryan provides a change of pace

After the upbeat punk stylings of The Cloves and the Tobacco, you can find more mellow, relaxed vibes from Zach Bryan. This is his first entry in the top 10 with the track Something in the Orange

There’s quite a melancholic approach to the lyrics and arrangement, as he takes an introspective look at a relationship.

The vocals really carry the momentum of this song, with strong melodies throughout and dominating dynamics which compliment the soft approach of the accompanying acoustic guitar.

The chord progression is quite straightforward, though it does feature a tricky D/F♯ which can be a good challenge for guitarists. Listen to Something in the Orange here.

Consistent top 10 appearances

There tends to be artists and tracks which appear across multiple months in the top 10, often of the golden oldie variety. February was no different, featuring Journey’s classic Don’t Stop Believin’ and the perennial Losing My Religion. However, Rod Stewart is a new entry with his cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s classic Have You Ever Seen The Rain.

A laid back soft rock track featuring some tricky chords, this song is a good challenge to jam with, and it also features a catchy chorus.

At number 1, Anıl Emre Daldal has managed to retain top spot for the second month in a row. The atmospheric vibes of B. are memorable, and similarly, lifememo stays at number 6 with the melancholic i dreamt of existing.
