Jamuary blues

There’s a few ballads featured this month, including some love songs with a certain sadness to them – maybe it’s because of the time of year? The mornings are cold and dark, and we can turn to a comforting song for some musical nourishment from those Jamuary blues.

“Broken Vow” by Lara Fabian enters at number 4 in this month’s top 10 songs – this is a melancholic pop number featuring a powerful string arrangement alongside soaring vocal melodies, and there’s a nice chord progression to practice, particularly for the piano

Do you remember Tom Odell’s hit “Another Love” from 2013? It made it to number 7 this month, and with wistful lyrics about the struggles of love, it follows a similar wistful path to Lara Fabian’s track. There’s a beautiful chord progression on the piano played in the higher register, which really suits the angst of the vocals.

On a lighter note (still featuring a romantic theme, nonetheless), there is a classic 90’s track entering at number 10 in the form of Take That’s “Back For Good”. It features a nicely arranged ascending chord progression throughout most of the song, and of course, who can resist belting out that infectiously catchy chorus? Check it out here.

Golden oldies

Amongst the familiar faces of R.E.M., Ed Sheeran and Amy Winehouse, there are the legendary artists Creedence Clearwater Revival and Johnny Cash in this month’s top 10 songs of Jamuary.

Cash’s iconic cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” entered at number 8 – though not the happiest song in the world (are you seeing a theme here?), the second half certainly gives uplifting vibes, powerfully pushing beyond the melancholy. It features quite a simple chord progression, which is very effective in the stripped back approach to the song.
